How to Play Frog Hop Sounds – Beginning Sounds
Frog Hop Sounds helps beginning readers hear and identify the first sound in a word. It can be played one-on-one or with a small group.
What you need: The Frog Hop printable and one
small counter, coin, button or paper “frog” for each player.
- Choose a caller. An adult, teacher or confident reader can begin as the caller.
- Call a sound. The caller chooses a beginning sound and says, for example, “Hop to a word that starts with /m/.” Say the sound rather than the letter name.
- Find a matching word. The player looks over the board and finds a word beginning with that sound, such as moon or map.
- Make the frog hop. The player places their counter on the chosen word.
- Say and stretch the word. The player says, “mmm-moon, /m/,” clearly identifying the first sound.
- Score the turn. A correct answer earns one point. If the answer is incorrect, return the counter and try another word.
- Keep playing. Call a new sound each round. The first player to five points wins, or continue until every word has been visited.
Make it easier
Say a word from the board—“moon”—and ask, “What sound does moon start with?” The child identifies /m/ before hopping onto the word.
Make it harder
Give only the sound and ask the child to find two matching words. Older learners can add another word with the same beginning sound that is not printed on the board.
For pre-readers
The current board uses written words. An adult can read unfamiliar words aloud so the child can focus on hearing the initial sound rather than decoding every word.
